HAMPTONS VOYEUR: Art House B&B

BEFORE I MOVED TO SPRINGS, L.I., I figured the area’s reputation as an artists’ colony — established in the days when Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and their friends made mayhem at local bars and beaches — was a thing of the past.

Not so, it turns out. The neighborhood is still full of accomplished artists working in various media. Two of them — Rosalind Brenner, a painter and poet who has a longstanding art glass business, and her husband, Michael Cardacino, who makes large-scale art by digitally manipulating photos, among other techniques, spent 3-1/2 years designing and building a sprawling contemporary villa of wood, glass, stained glass, and cultured stone in a highly original style. They’ve recently configured it so they can rent out two of the luxurious bedrooms and baths as a B&B.

Set in the woods a short walk from the unspoiled beaches of Gardiner’s Bay, the 7,000-square-foot house has it all and then some, including a 66-foot outdoor pool, hot tub with waterfall, wading pool, indoor ‘endless’ pool, gym, library, media room with Blu-Ray and Wii, and game room with a pool table.

Many of the furnishings came from their former residence, a Victorian house in Douglaston, Queens, that they spent years restoring. Everywhere you turn, it seems, there are plush sofas and chairs set up for reading, board games, conversation in front of the fireplace, or gazing through floor-to-ceiling windows at the tranquil surroundings.

My favorite corners of the house are decorated with Moroccan pillows and other accessories picked up on their travels, with Rosalind’s exuberant paintings and collages hanging on the walls.

Breakfast is served in a super-sized kitchen loaded with specialized equipment where Michael makes pizzas and Rosalind pursues a newfound interest in baking, at a table set with textiles from India and blue-and-white Finnish china.
